We recently collaborated with RedFin to make some spring care tips for your home a little easier. If you love the tips and tricks we give you on your pond, follow this link to RedFin to see if they have some other home improvement tips to make your life easier around the rest of the house.
Spring has sprung, and it seems this extra short season has summer chasing right behind, as day time temperatures quickly warm up.
Be sure to check your aerator, to make sure you have plenty of oxygen during the warmer weather. It may be time to look into replacing the diaphragms, maybe the magnets, possibly even the entire aerator. If it is more than a couple years old, it’s not a bad idea to have a back up aerator on stand by, in case your gives up the ghost on one of these holiday weekends.
Make sure that you’ve cleaned the glass on your lights, so the summer evenings by the pond are a little brighter. Algae, and other debris can settle on the glass lenses of the light fixtures dimming the output, and making your pond darker, and harder to see the fish.
Beware of the heat, as day time temperatures climb. Adding some algae controls can be dangerous for your fish if the air temperature is above 75 degrees. As the algae dies off, it consumes oxygen from the water, and can actually suffocate your fish, even if you have an aerator and waterfall running.
Evaporation can really drop your water level, on days when its over 90 degrees, so make sure that you have some de-chlorinator on hand to get rid of the chlorine after you top your pond off. **IMPORTANT** if you turn your hose on to fill the pond, and then walk away, put a rubber band, or string, or carry a strange object to help you remember to shut the water off. Leaving it running for hours, or even worse, overnight, can really harm your beloved fish!
